One of the world's greatest opera singers is set to return home to star in a popular North Wales music festival. Global opera star Sir Bryn Terfel will headline the opening concert at St Asaph Cathedral.
Homecoming Performance
The internationally famous bass baritone grew up in Gwynedd and is thrilled to make his performing debut at the event. He will perform a selection of his favourite songs and share stories from his remarkable career.
Reunion with Royal Composer
The opening concert will reunite the singer with royal composer Paul Mealor, who is the festival's artistic director. Sir Bryn previously sang a piece composed by Professor Mealor at the Coronation of King Charles.
Sir Bryn's Reflections
Sir Bryn Terfel said: "St Asaph Cathedral has a resonance unlike anywhere else. It will be a privilege to let my voice travel through a space shaped by centuries of worship and music." He added: "Performing in North Wales always feels like coming home. There’s something about these walls, this community, this landscape — it reminds me why I became a singer."
Festival Highlights
The festival is being supported by the Pendine Park care organisation to mark its 40th anniversary year. Other highlights of the week include a young musician competition and a performance by the BBC National Orchestra of Wales.
Artistic Director's Excitement
Professor Paul Mealor, artistic director, said: "It will be an event that will be hugely anticipated and will surely be a memorable occasion spoken about for many years." He continued: "Bryn will sing some of his favourite songs to the accompaniment of pianist Ellis Thomas. At the start of the second half he will talk about his life and work with the Bishop of St Asaph, the Right Reverend Gregory Cameron."
