Bradford Teen Wins Royal Photographic Society Photography Award

Bradford Teen Photographer Honoured by Royal Photographic Society

A young photographer from Bradford has achieved remarkable recognition from one of the world's oldest photographic societies. Muhammad Ibrahim Butt, who participated in the Bradford City FC Community Foundation's Click & Connect project, received the Youth Category Winner award at a special ceremony.

The event was attended by the President of the Royal Photographic Society (RPS), Simon Hill Hon FRPS, along with RPS representatives, fellow photographers, and Muhammad Ibrahim's family. The award, which includes a trophy and certificate, celebrates his outstanding contributions to photography through the Visual Art Group's Youth Engagement Awards.

Inspiring Words from the Award Winner

Muhammad Ibrahim, who will turn 16 in July, expressed his surprise and gratitude. "It's surreal to be receiving this award," he said. "I've absolutely loved being involved in the project, and I never expected to be recognised for my work. It's the person not the camera that counts, and I'm proud to be part of this fantastic exhibition."

He also thanked project leaders Pav and Shy, as well as his family, for their support in bringing the initiative to life.

Recognition from Photography Leaders

Simon Hill Hon FRPS praised the young photographer's achievements. "Muhammad Ibrahim Butt's work stands out for its originality, confidence and compelling visual storytelling," he stated. "His images capture not only places, but perspective, offering a thoughtful and authentic reflection of Bradford through young eyes."

He emphasised that the Click & Connect project demonstrates photography's role as a force for positive change, strengthening identity and connecting communities.

Community Project Highlights

The Click & Connect project, devised and delivered by local photographer Shy Burhan, included:

  • Workshops on heritage, shooting styles, symbolism, and creative techniques.
  • Inspirational photography walks around Bradford landmarks such as Manningham, Salts Mill, Bolling Hall, and Haworth.
  • A journey on the Worth Valley Steam Train to explore diverse photographic opportunities.

Shy Burhan noted, "Seeing him develop as both a photographer and a young person throughout the project has been fantastic."

Additional Accolades and Future Celebrations

Pavan Sembi, Head of Community Engagement and Inclusion at the Bradford City FC Community Foundation, was also recognised with Highly Commended and Commended awards for her contribution. She highlighted the project's success in showcasing local talent.

"The fact that an institution like the RPS has taken notice is testament to the huge amount of talent our young people here in Bradford display," she said.

Further celebration is planned with the publication of Bradford Through Our Eyes, a photography book edited by Pavan Sembi and supported by the Northern Community Fund. This book will feature artworks from the Click & Connect exhibition and is set for release this year.
