A Birmingham secondary school has been recognised as one of the best in the city after receiving top grades from Ofsted.
Cardinal Wiseman Catholic School in Kingstanding achieved 'strong standard' ratings in five areas, just one step below the highest possible rating of 'exceptional'. This is a rare achievement for any school.
The school, which has nearly 800 pupils, was inspected under Ofsted's new framework, which grades schools across multiple areas rather than giving a single overall rating. The five 'strong standard' ratings were awarded for attendance and behaviour, curriculum and teaching, inclusion, leadership and governance, and personal development and wellbeing. The school also received an 'expected standard' grade for achievement.
In its report, Ofsted said: 'Pupils’ behaviour is impeccable. They are friendly, welcoming and a pleasure to speak to. Staff enforce expectations consistently in the rare instances where this is needed and use any sanctions appropriately. The school’s culture promotes mutual respect, tolerance and manners.'
Inspectors added: 'The school’s work to promote pupils’ personal development is remarkable and highly effective. Leaders have developed their offer around their ‘transformation curriculum’ that is an entitlement for all pupils. Leaders place great emphasis on educating pupils beyond the classroom, so that they are exceptionally well prepared for life after school.'
Leaders at Cardinal Wiseman are celebrating the results, which reflect consistent performance across the school.
