Drivers Face £120 Fines for Clean Air Zone Violations in 4 UK Cities
£120 Fines for Clean Air Zone Breaches in 4 Cities

Drivers are being warned they could face £120 fines for unknowingly violating Clean Air Zone rules in four UK cities this summer. Experts caution that thousands of motorists are passing through restricted areas during day trips and weekend getaways without being aware of the charges, which often arrive as penalty notices weeks later.

Which Cities Enforce Clean Air Zones?

Birmingham, Bath, Bristol, and Sheffield currently have Clean Air Zones in operation. In Birmingham, vehicles that fail to meet emissions standards are charged £8 per day for driving within the zone. The zone covers the city centre inside the A4540 Middleway and is active 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Over 300 road signs, including informational signs before the boundary and signs on the boundary itself, are in place to alert drivers.

How Fines Are Incurred

Mo Rafique, Vehicle Security Expert at Motor Guards, explained that many drivers enter these zones for shopping, concerts, weekend trips, or family visits without realising they are in a Clean Air Zone. “A lot of people are driving into these cities for shopping trips, concerts, weekends away or family visits and don't even realise they've entered a Clean Air Zone,” he said.

“So the last thing they expect is an extra charge, or multiple fines, just for driving into a city centre for a few hours.” Drivers who neglect to pay the daily charge can receive a Penalty Charge Notice of £120, reduced to £60 if paid within 14 days.

Sat Nav Limitations

Rafique noted that many drivers rely on satellite navigation systems, which often fail to warn them about Clean Air Zones. “People trust their sat nav completely now, but most systems won't actively warn you that you're about to enter a chargeable Clean Air Zone, which is why so many drivers only realise afterwards,” he said.

He added that Clean Air Zones are based on emissions standards, not the age or appearance of a vehicle. “That catches a huge number of navigation technologies and offers little assistance in avoiding these costly mistakes.”

Impact on Families

For families with stretched summer budgets, unexpected fines can be particularly frustrating. “For a lot of families, summer budgets are already stretched enough as it is, so picking up a £60 fine after a weekend away can feel incredibly frustrating, especially when people genuinely didn't realise the rules applied,” Rafique said.

Drivers are urged to check whether their vehicle meets emissions standards before travelling to cities with Clean Air Zones to avoid unexpected penalties.
