UK Braces for Third Heatwave as Met Office Issues Verdict on Extreme Temperatures
UK Braces for Third Heatwave as Met Office Issues Verdict

The United Kingdom is preparing for a possible third heatwave of 2026, with the Met Office providing an update on the likelihood of 'extreme high temperatures' returning. Following a record-breaking June day that saw temperatures peak at 37.7°C, forecasters have indicated that while heatwave conditions may return for some areas, the probability of such extreme highs is currently low.

Record-Breaking June Heat

Last week, the UK experienced its warmest June day ever recorded, with the mercury reaching 37.7°C at Lingwood in Norfolk, east of Norwich. This surpassed the previous record of 37.3°C set at Santon Downham in Suffolk just the day before, according to the Manchester Evening News. The heatwave brought elevated humidity levels across much of the country, making conditions particularly uncomfortable.

This Week's Forecast: Settled and Pleasant

Met Office forecaster Neil Armstrong stated that this week should remain 'pleasant' for most, with temperatures expected to stay largely in the low to mid-20s Celsius. After the extreme heat, conditions have eased back towards seasonal averages, bringing settled weather across many regions. However, the respite may be brief, as forecasts suggest a return to warmer conditions early next week.

Potential Third Heatwave on the Horizon

According to the Met Office, temperatures are expected to climb again during the early part of next week, potentially reaching heatwave thresholds in certain areas. Tony Wisson, Met Office Deputy Chief Forecaster, explained: 'Toward the weekend, high pressure will continue to build in across most of the UK as it extends from the Azores. This will lead to more settled, warm or very warm conditions for many, especially across England and Wales, though some rain may still affect the far north.'

The forecast for this weekend suggests that temperatures could approach the high 20s°C across parts of England, perhaps reaching 30°C in parts of the southeast, with values of mid to high 20s°C in Wales. While a return to heatwave conditions is looking increasingly likely for some areas, the likelihood of such extreme high temperatures or high levels of humidity as last week is currently low, according to Wisson.

What This Means for the Public

Although the extreme heat of last week is not expected to recur immediately, the public should remain prepared for warmer weather, especially in southern and eastern parts of England. The Met Office advises staying hydrated, avoiding prolonged sun exposure during peak hours, and checking on vulnerable individuals. As the situation develops, further updates will be provided to ensure communities are well-informed.
