Catherine O'Hara's Brother Opens Up About Her Quiet Final Days
The brother of beloved actress Catherine O'Hara has shared heartbreaking details about her final days following her passing earlier this year. The Home Alone and Schitt's Creek star died at her Los Angeles home on January 30, 2026, at the age of 71.
Private Battle With Cancer Revealed
While her agent initially stated she died "following a brief illness," it was later disclosed that Catherine had been privately battling rectal cancer. Her death certificate listed pulmonary embolism as the immediate cause, with rectal cancer as the underlying condition. The oncologist who signed the certificate confirmed he had been treating her since March of the previous year.
Fans were shocked by the news, as Catherine had chosen never to publicly reveal her health struggles. Her brother Michael O'Hara recently spoke about her final days on the podcast Dreams of Our Loved Ones, revealing that she "wasn't talking much in the end."
Emotional Dream Encounters
Michael explained that his sister didn't want to talk on the phone during her final period, and the geographical distance between them made visits difficult. "She didn't really want to talk on the phone... And she didn't live close by, she's in Los Angeles," he shared.
He described a poignant dream he experienced just days before her passing: "Actually oddly enough I had a dream days, a few days before she died, my sister. And I was hugging her, which was really beautiful. And I guess it was sort of a goodbye."
Following her death, Michael experienced another comforting dream where Catherine appeared to be thriving in the afterlife. "Since then, I've had a lovely dream where I was visiting her, and she was in a new house and it was being renovated, and she was really busy choosing furniture and couches," he recalled.
Unfinished Projects and Lasting Legacy
Before her death, Catherine was scheduled to begin filming The Studio last month, leaving her team stunned and heartbroken by her passing. Her production timetable had been quietly adjusted due to her dealing with "personal matters" related to her health.
Michael reflected on the enduring connection with his sister: "We all have our own experiences that are related to us and our own deceased loved ones and we're all interconnected and the love, you know, continues no matter what. They're always with us."
The actress, best known for playing Kevin's mother in the beloved holiday film Home Alone and for her acclaimed role in Schitt's Creek, leaves behind a legacy of memorable performances that continue to entertain audiences worldwide.
