Father's Heartburn Was Actually Early-Stage Oesophageal Cancer

Father's Persistent Heartburn Revealed as Oesophageal Cancer

A father from Mansfield has been diagnosed with oesophageal cancer after mistaking his symptoms for ordinary heartburn for several years. John Wardman, 60, regularly used over-the-counter remedies like Gaviscon to manage acid reflux, particularly after consuming wine or spicy foods, assuming it was a minor issue he had to endure.

Symptoms Escalated to Night-Time Choking and Chest Pains

John's condition worsened when he began experiencing alarming new symptoms, including waking up at night choking and persistent chest discomfort. Despite being on holiday, his reflux failed to ease, prompting him to contact his GP. After initial medication proved ineffective, he noticed an abnormal sensation of food travelling down his throat, which led to an urgent referral for further investigation.

Urgent Tests Confirmed Early-Stage Cancer

An endoscopy performed within a week revealed abnormalities in his oesophagus, with an affected area measuring three to four centimetres. Subsequent scans confirmed early-stage oesophageal cancer linked to Barrett's oesophagus, a condition where the lining of the food pipe changes due to long-term acid exposure. As the cancer had slightly spread into surrounding tissue, doctors recommended four cycles of chemotherapy followed by surgery.

John's Active Lifestyle Aids Treatment and Recovery

John, who works in his family's appliance business and enjoys activities like skiing, walking, and ballroom dancing, believes his active lifestyle has helped him cope with the arduous treatment. He expressed deep gratitude for acting on his symptoms early, which allowed for quicker detection and treatment. "Doing something made all the difference," he said, praising the exceptional care from the NHS team supporting him.

Health Charity Warns Against Ignoring Persistent Heartburn

Mimi McCord, Founder of Heartburn Cancer UK, emphasised that many people manage heartburn with over-the-counter remedies without realising it can be a warning sign of something more serious. Oesophageal cancer is one of the deadliest cancers in the UK, yet awareness remains low. She urged individuals to consult their GP if heartburn or reflux persists for three weeks or more, rather than continuing to self-medicate.

Recognising the Symptoms of Oesophageal Cancer

The NHS lists several symptoms that could indicate oesophageal cancer, including:

  • Difficulty swallowing (dysphagia)
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Persistent heartburn or acid reflux
  • Excessive burping or signs of indigestion
  • A persistent cough or hoarse voice
  • Loss of appetite or unexplained weight loss
  • Fatigue or low energy levels
  • Discomfort in the throat or centre of the chest, especially when swallowing

John's story serves as a crucial reminder to take persistent symptoms seriously and seek medical advice promptly.
