Lincoln Chemotherapy Coordinator Honoured with Top NHS Award
A dedicated chemotherapy care coordinator from Lincoln has received one of England's most prestigious nursing honours, the Chief Nursing Officer for England Award. Carole Jackson, who works on the Ingham Suite at Lincoln County Hospital, was recognised for providing exceptional emotional support to patients undergoing cancer treatment.
Going Above and Beyond for Patients
Carole was nominated by her colleague, Catherine Howle, a Macmillan Personalisation Improvement Facilitator, who highlighted Carole's unique approach to patient care. Carole completes approximately 1,600 holistic needs assessments each year, taking the time to understand both clinical and personal circumstances.
"She welcomes everyone onto the unit like a friend, remembering the little things they've shared with her," Catherine said. "Most importantly, she sees beyond a cancer diagnosis. Because of the genuine connection Carole builds with patients, she's able to go above and beyond."
A Natural in Her Role
Carole began her role at Grantham and District Hospital during the challenging COVID-19 pandemic. Her manager remarked that she was "born for this role," though Carole remains incredibly modest about her achievements. Her work involves identifying concerns about treatment or personal circumstances and creating tailored support plans while directing patients to relevant services.
On receiving her award, Carole expressed her feelings: "I feel very honoured to have been nominated in the first place and then to actually win the award. I felt very overwhelmed when I was told. I love my job and feel very privileged to support and advocate for patients when they are going through cancer treatment."
The national award celebrates NHS support staff who demonstrate exceptional dedication in their roles, and Carole's story serves as an inspiring example of the profound difference one person can make in the lives of those facing cancer.
