A Midlands paedophile who faked a disability to evade prosecution for child sex abuse has been sentenced to 15 years in prison. John Siddell, 41, pretended to be a wheelchair user, mute, and unable to hold up his own head while police investigated sexual offences against three boys under 14 between 2018 and 2021.
Deception Unravelled by Social Life
Siddell attended Elvis Presley nights at a social club and was filmed walking unaided, contradicting his claims of severe illness. His brother James Siddell, 44, helped maintain the lie, even suggesting to psychiatrists that John was unfit for trial.
At Leicester Crown Court on Tuesday, May 12, Judge Keith Raynor described the brothers' behaviour as 'scheming and devious', stating they 'misrepresented John Siddell’s mental and physical abilities, entirely corrupting and undermining the course of justice.'
Double Life Exposed
Prosecutor Claudia James said the brothers lived a 'not-so-covert double life'. Social media, phone photos, and home CCTV revealed John walking, talking, and engaging with others at his local social club, including watching Newcastle United matches. He took selfies smiling and posing with his head up, and was photographed drinking a pint of Guinness.
Video footage from June 2022 showed him walking unaided and using his wheelchair like a 'trolley' to move household items over a mile. A hospital carer in July 2024 described him as 'the most verbal non-verbal person I have ever seen.'
Hospital Stay at Taxpayer Expense
Judge Raynor noted Siddell was kept in hospital for two weeks 'at the taxpayers’ expense' while the NHS was 'extremely pressed' and should have been treating other deserving patients.
Siddell convinced psychiatrists he was unfit for trial during an assessment where his brother spoke for him. He 'presented as wheelchair-bound, refused to open his eyes, and was unable to hold his own head up.' A jury later determined he had abused the boys in a fact-finding hearing.
Psychiatrist's Conclusion
In May 2024, another psychiatrist found 'no reliable basis' that Siddell was unfit to stand trial. A month earlier, a police officer saw him 'sat upright in his wheelchair communicating with James' before 'dramatically changing once arriving at the office for his assessment.'
After being charged with perverting the course of justice, the defendants failed to attend a plea hearing in July 2025, claiming John had suffered a seizure and was hospitalised.
Guilty Pleas
In September, John admitted five counts of sexual assault of a child under 13, five counts of sexual assault, one count of causing or inciting a child to engage in sexual activity, and four counts of causing or inciting a child under 13 to engage in sexual activity. Both brothers admitted perverting the course of justice between November 2021 and August 2025.
A victim statement read in court said the boys are 'still dealing with the effects of the abuse.'
Defence Arguments
Jamie Adams, defending John, said he is a 'very vulnerable and disadvantaged human being' with epilepsy, autism, and learning disabilities, and that relatives had 'exaggerated John’s ill-health throughout his life to get some financial benefit.' Nicholas Peacock, defending James, described a 'generationally dysfunctional family who largely survived on the benefits system.'
Nicola Potts of the Crown Prosecution Service said: 'While much of the attention will be the lies and antics of the Siddell brothers, at the heart of this are three sexual abuse victims who had their childhood snatched from them by John Siddell’s cruel manipulation. His cynical lies and the support he received from James was a further insult to these victims.'
