A woman may be left limping for the rest of her life after her thug boyfriend brutally attacked her following a night out drinking. Andrew Weldon, 44, grabbed his partner by the throat, pinned her against a wall, and later shoved her off a bed, causing her to break her ankle.
Attack Details
The incident occurred on October 18 last year after the couple, who had been together for about 12 months, returned home from a night out. Birmingham Crown Court heard that an argument broke out, and Weldon became verbally aggressive. He grabbed the woman by the throat and pinned her against the wall, strangling her but not to the point of unconsciousness.
The victim scratched Weldon to escape and curled up in a foetal position on the bed to protect herself. However, Weldon pushed her off the bed, causing her to suffer a broken ankle. She also sustained a black eye and split lip, although she could not recall how those injuries occurred.
Medical Consequences
The woman required surgery for her broken ankle and still struggles to bear weight on it or walk long distances. A doctor confirmed there is a high probability she will be left with a permanent limp. Recorder Rebecca Wade KC described Weldon's decision to deny the offences and force the victim to testify as baffling.
Sentencing
Weldon, of Wyndhurst Road, Stechford, was sentenced to four years in prison after being found guilty of unlawful wounding and strangulation. The judge noted that the couple had been consuming alcohol before the attack.
Gary Cook, defending, said Weldon is undermined by alcohol and cocaine abuse and is a product of his environment, having witnessed physical abuse of his mother as a child. He added that Weldon fully accepts responsibility and feels high remorse.
