Denbighshire Care Manager Wins Top Wales Award for Life-Changing Work
Denbighshire Care Manager Scoops Prestigious Wales Award

A dedicated care manager from Denbighshire has been celebrated as a hero after receiving a top honour for his transformative impact on the lives of adults with learning disabilities.

Outstanding Service Recognised at National Ceremony

Michael Rawlins, 35, who manages Oak Residential Home in Llandyrnog, near Denbigh, was honoured in the Outstanding Service category at this year’s Wales Care Awards, an event often described as the 'Oscars of social care'. The ceremony, organised by Care Forum Wales and sponsored by Meddyg Care, took place at Cardiff’s Holland House Hotel, where Michael was presented with the Silver award.

Judges praised Michael for his unwavering dedication and the life-changing difference he has made to both residents and staff at the home, which is run by Mental Health Care (MHC) Ltd. Michael has been with MHC since 2010 and took over the helm at Oak in 2023.

A Team Effort and Tangible Results

Despite the personal accolade, Michael remained modest, crediting his 40-strong team for the nomination. "Naturally I’m pleased, but this is a recognition of our hard work as a team," he said before the ceremony. "Everyone here is amazing – they give their all, every single day, to make a difference to the people who live at Oak."

Under his leadership, the specialist home, which provides a sensory-friendly environment for eight residents, has seen remarkable progress. A major achievement highlighted was that three long-term residents have successfully moved to more independent living since he became manager. "That’s what it’s all about – helping people build skills, grow in confidence and, when they’re ready, take that next step," Michael added.

This success was echoed in a glowing review from Care Inspectorate Wales last year, which praised the home's focus on communication, choice, and empowerment, noting that "people’s quality of life has been enriched."

Leadership and Legacy in Social Care

Seona Weir, the Managing Director of MHC who nominated Michael, said: "Michael is the embodiment of what we aim for in social care – compassion, professionalism and an unwavering commitment to improving lives."

Shaun Jones, Director of Operations at MHC, also commended Michael's work: "Michael has transformed the lives of individuals in his care by delivering outcomes that are both meaningful and achievable. He’s also enhanced the living space, ensuring all sensory needs are met."

Mario Kreft MBE, Chair of Care Forum Wales, said the awards shine a light on the "unsung heroes and heroines" of the social care sector. He emphasised the vital role care workers play, describing the sector as "the glue that binds our communities together." A poignant moment during the evening saw Mair Elis-Thomas, widow of the late Lord Dafydd Elis Thomas, present an award, reflecting his long-standing support for social care.

Outside of his demanding role, Michael is a hands-on dad to two young children and still finds time to help on his family's sheep farm in Henllan, demonstrating his deep-rooted commitment to community and family.
