Hucknall Flying High Academy Launches Kindness Crew with Monthly Care Home Visits
Children from Hucknall Flying High Academy, selected for the school's new Kindness Crew, have embarked on a mission to spread kindness throughout their local Hucknall community. Their inaugural project involves a partnership with Harrier House Care Home on Hurricane Road in Hucknall, where pupils will visit once a month to engage with residents through a variety of activities.
Celebrating the Year of Reading with Intergenerational Bonding
The Kindness Crew's first visit coincided with the Year of Reading, allowing children to share stories with residents and proudly demonstrate their reading skills. Karl Clowery, headteacher at Hucknall Flying High Academy, expressed his delight at the opportunity. "We are thrilled to visit and connect with the residents of Harrier House Care Home," he said. "Our kindness project has started on a wonderfully positive note, with children reading and sharing their favourite tales."
Karl added that the children have relished reading aloud and forming new friendships, while residents have reciprocated by sharing personal stories. "This exchange breaks down age stereotypes and strengthens generational friendships, creating a heart-warming connection," he noted. The school aims to provide companionship, joy, and meaningful experiences for all involved.
Pupil and Staff Enthusiasm for the Initiative
Pupils have responded with overwhelming enthusiasm. Amelia, from Foundation Stage 2, exclaimed, "The residents were fun; this was the best trip ever!" Thomas, a Year 4 student, shared, "I really enjoyed reading with them and can't wait to return for baking sessions."
Betsan Dempsey, family support worker and ELSA at Hucknall Flying High Academy, coordinates the visits and highlighted the mutual benefits. "It's been an absolute pleasure to take the children to Harrier House; everyone gains so much from the experience," she said. She praised Emma Cass, Activities Lead at Harrier House, for making them feel welcome and expressed eagerness for future visits.
Expanding the Program Across the School
Over the coming year, all classes at Hucknall Flying High Academy will participate in visits to Harrier House Care Home. This expansion aims to deepen the bond between generations in Hucknall, ensuring that more children can engage in these enriching intergenerational activities. Karl Clowery concluded, "This is only the beginning, and we look forward to building even more moments of kindness together."
