Urgent Safety Alert: 85,000 UK Homes to Be Visited Over Tumble Dryer Fire Risk

In a critical safety update, more than 85,000 households across the United Kingdom are set to receive home visits due to recalled tumble dryers that present a serious risk of fire. The affected appliances, which can ignite during typical use, have prompted a nationwide modification programme to ensure public safety.

Government Confirms Major Fire Hazard

Back in December, the Labour Party government confirmed that safety regulators had identified a series of tumble dryers manufactured by several brands that could pose a significant fire hazard. The impacted brands include Baumatic, Candy, Caple, Haier, Hoover, Lamona, Iberna, and Montpellier.

Yesterday, the Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS) provided an update, stating that companies will be visiting homes affected by the recall to address the issue directly.

Manufacturers to Conduct Home Visits for Safety Modifications

The OPSS announced: “The UK manufacturers have initiated a modification programme for products in scope of the safety issue. The companies will visit every home containing affected tumble dryers and make them safe.”

Authorities are urging all potentially affected members of the public, including those who are uncertain whether their appliance is impacted, to check the model links and contact the manufacturer immediately.

Detailed Product Safety Reports Available

A Product Safety Report page has been created for each affected product, accessible via the OPSS website. These reports offer comprehensive information on the specific models involved, the risks they present, and the corrective actions required.

According to the safety alert, the products pose a fire risk because an internal short circuit can occur within the tumble dryer during normal operation. This malfunction can cause the appliance to ignite, potentially leading to a dangerous fire.

The OPSS explained further: “The products present a risk of fire as it is possible for an internal short circuit to occur within the tumble dryer during normal use. This can cause the tumble dryer to ignite, causing a fire.”

Additionally, the products do not comply with the requirements of the Electrical Equipment (Safety) Regulations 2016, highlighting the severity of the safety breach.

How to Check If Your Tumble Dryer Is Affected

If you suspect your tumble dryer may be included in the recall, or if you are unsure of your model, it is crucial to take action. You can contact the dedicated helpline at 0808 178 0516, available Monday to Friday from 9 am to 5 pm, and Saturday from 10 am to 4 pm.

This proactive measure aims to prevent potential fires and ensure the safety of households nationwide, as manufacturers work diligently to rectify the hazardous issue through direct home interventions.
