Fuel Tanker Fire Erupts Near Telford Primary School
A dramatic incident unfolded on Marlborough Way in Telford on Tuesday, April 14, when a fuel tanker caught fire, raising immediate concerns about a potential explosion. The tanker was carrying approximately 15,000 litres of fuel, creating a highly volatile situation close to a local primary school.
Swift Police Action Prevents Disaster
Upon arrival at the scene, PC Savannah Green and PCSO George Mulhall of West Mercia Police took decisive action. PC Green promptly closed the road and alerted emergency services via radio, while PCSO Mulhall approached the burning vehicle to check for any trapped or injured individuals.
Recognising the imminent danger, PCSO Mulhall was directed to evacuate the nearby primary school, as it was uncertain whether the fuel tanker might explode. With the assistance of three members of the public, he alerted teachers and staff, leading to the safe evacuation of around 500 pupils.
Community and Emergency Services Collaborate
Meanwhile, PC Green coordinated the incident, calling for backup as Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service rushed to the location. Thankfully, within ten minutes of the officers' arrival, fire crews were on site and successfully brought the blaze under control.
West Midlands Ambulance Service confirmed that one man was transported to hospital following the fire, but a spokesperson for West Mercia Police emphasised that no one suffered serious injuries during the ordeal.
Officers Praised for Courage and Professionalism
Superintendent Edward Hancox commended the officers for their bravery and quick thinking. "Savannah and George showed courage and professionalism in an unpredictable and potentially life-threatening situation," he stated.
He added, "While most people quite rightly move away from danger, our officers run towards it to keep our communities safe. Their quick thinking, calm decision-making, and willingness to put themselves at risk ensured the area was quickly secured, the fire service could get to work, and school children were evacuated safely."
The superintendent also expressed gratitude towards the school staff and community members who assisted in the evacuation, noting that their cooperation was crucial in maintaining safety during the initial stages of the incident.
This event highlights the critical role of emergency responders and community solidarity in managing sudden crises, ensuring public safety even under extreme pressure.
