A significant fire in Wolverhampton sent a vast plume of thick grey smoke billowing across the Midlands city on Wednesday morning, creating a dramatic and concerning scene visible for miles around.
Major Emergency Response to Sunbeam Street Blaze
West Midlands Fire Service (WMFS) was alerted to the incident on Sunbeam Street in the Blakenhall area shortly after 7.30am on January 14. The scale of the fire prompted a substantial emergency response, with 21 fire engines dispatched to the scene. In total, around 80 firefighters were involved in tackling the inferno, with crews still arriving past midday as operations continued.
Widespread Disruption and Public Health Advice
The smoke cloud generated by the blaze was extensive, drifting over Wolverhampton city centre and reaching into the northern parts of the city. Motorists reported seeing the smoke from as far away as the M54 motorway in South Staffordshire, indicating it had travelled more than two miles.
Authorities immediately issued advice to protect public health. Residents in nearby properties were urged to close their windows and doors to avoid the smoke. To manage the incident and ensure public safety, roads in the vicinity were cordoned off, with police officers deployed to direct traffic. Upper Villiers Street remained closed from its junction with Goldthorn Hill to Marston Road.
Ongoing Operations and Reassurance
In a statement, WMFS provided an update, confirming that good progress was being made by crews across the incident ground. They offered the crucial reassurance that, at that time, there had been no reported injuries or casualties.
The statement also noted that support was being provided by the gas board and police colleagues. However, it warned that a significant number of resources would remain at the scene throughout the afternoon and overnight, meaning disruption in the Blakenhall area would continue. The public were asked to continue avoiding the area where possible.
The fire service reiterated its health guidance, stating: "Please continue to avoid the area and if you are affected by smoke, close your windows and doors."
