Storm Goretti to Hit UK: 20cm Snow Forecast for West Midlands
Storm Goretti: Heavy Snow Warning for West Midlands

Britain is braced for a fresh onslaught of wintry weather as Storm Goretti is forecast to crash into the UK on Thursday, bringing the threat of significant snowfall and travel chaos.

Met Office Issues Yellow Warning

The Met Office has placed a yellow weather warning for snow across a swathe of the country, with the West Midlands expected to be one of the worst-hit regions. The warning is scheduled to be active from 6pm on Thursday, 8th January 2026.

Forecasters warn that the incoming storm could deliver heavier snowfall than experienced so far this winter. The Met Office alert states that Storm Goretti will "likely bring heavy snow leading to disruption and difficult travelling conditions."

Significant Snowfall Expected

A deep area of low pressure, named by Meteo France, will track across southern parts of the UK from Thursday into Friday. This system will bring a volatile mix of rain, snow, and strong winds.

Meteorologists indicate that a spell of heavy snow is likely to develop over higher ground in south Wales later on Thursday. As temperatures drop, rain is expected to turn to snow more widely across parts of England and Wales overnight.

Between 5cm and 10cm of snow is predicted to settle widely, with a potential for accumulations of up to 20cm in some locations, particularly over higher terrain. The accompanying strong winds also raise the risk of snow drifts, exacerbating the disruption.

Disruption and Clearance

The impending conditions suggest a difficult period for travel, with road and rail networks likely to be affected. Residents are advised to plan ahead and check for updates.

The Met Office forecast concludes that the band of rain and snow will clear eastwards during Friday, bringing an end to the most intense period of weather. However, the arrival of Storm Goretti serves as a sharp reminder that the worst of the winter weather may not yet be over for the UK.
