ITV's flagship morning programme, Good Morning Britain, was abruptly taken off air today to deliver a devastating news bulletin about a major accident overseas.
Live Broadcast Interrupted by Tragic News
The show, which had only just begun airing at 6am on Tuesday, 14th January 2026, was halted by presenters Ranvir Singh, Susanna Reid, and Ed Balls. They relayed what was described as "awful" and "terrible" news to viewers.
Ranvir Singh delivered the breaking report: "Breaking news this morning, at least 22 people have died in Thailand after a crane being used to build a new railway fell on a train running on tracks nearby." She confirmed the train was travelling from Bangkok to Ubon Ratchathani and that rescuers were on the scene searching for trapped individuals.
Details of the Thailand Crane Collapse
The incident involved a construction crane that collapsed onto a passenger train. According to reports from BBC News and WalesOnline, the youngest of the dozens injured is believed to be a one-year-old child. Over 80 people are thought to have been wounded.
While most sustained minor injuries, six people with serious injuries were transferred to another hospital for treatment. A train staff member, Thirasak Wongsoongnern, told local media the train hit three carriages, with the crane striking the back two. He explained the crane had been lifting a large concrete segment, which then dropped onto the train.
An eyewitness near the scene, Mitr Intrpanya, informed the AFP news agency he heard two explosions and a loud bang. "When I went to see what had happened," he said, "I found the crane sitting on a passenger train with three carriages. The metal from the crane appeared to strike the middle of the second carriage, slicing it in half."
Viewer Reaction and Programme Aftermath
Viewers of Good Morning Britain quickly reacted to the tragic news, with many taking to social media to describe the update as "really awful" and "terrible." The programme later resumed its scheduled broadcast following the sombre announcement.
Good Morning Britain airs weekdays from 6am on ITV1 and the ITVX streaming service.
