State Pensioners Face Suspension of 4 DWP Benefits After 28 Days in Hospital
State Pensioners Risk Losing 4 DWP Benefits After 28-Day Hospital Stay

State pensioners are at risk of having four key benefits suspended by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) due to a little-known 28-day rule. Many pensioners are unaware that their payments can be stopped if they remain in hospital for longer than 28 days.

Which benefits are affected?

The benefits that may be reduced or suspended include Pension Credit, Attendance Allowance, Disability Living Allowance (DLA), and Personal Independence Payment (PIP). According to Age UK, if you move from hospital to a care home or community hospital for free short-term support (intermediate care), this also counts toward the 28-day limit.

Impact on Pension Credit

If your other benefits are suspended, your Pension Credit amount may also be affected. When you leave hospital, you may be eligible to reapply. However, if your Pension Credit stops and you are part of a couple where one partner is under State Pension age, you might not be able to reclaim it.

Age UK advises: "Contact the office that pays your benefits to let them know when you go into hospital and when you leave. You will need to quote the number on your award letter." If your stay is fully self-funded or private, you should continue receiving benefits, but you must still inform the relevant office.

Hospital appointments and referrals

Hospital appointments are arranged by GP referral when further tests or specialised care are needed. Your GP can explain how to book your first appointment and check if accessibility adjustments are required, such as large-print letters. You may also book and manage appointments online via the NHS e-Referral service.

What to do if your stay exceeds 28 days

Age UK stresses: "It is important to check your benefit entitlement when you go into hospital, as it may change during your stay. Nothing changes if you are in hospital for fewer than 28 days, and your State Pension continues regardless. However, if you stay longer than 28 days, some things do change."

If you receive Attendance Allowance, DLA, or PIP, you must notify the DWP when you enter hospital. These benefits are suspended after 28 days. Other benefits like Pension Credit can be affected if these are suspended.
