The cause of death of Buffy the Vampire Slayer actor Nicholas Brendon has been confirmed. The star, best known for playing Xander Harris, passed away earlier this year at the age of 54.
Official Cause of Death
According to the Putnam County Coroner's report, Brendon died of atherosclerotic and hypertensive cardiovascular disease. The report revealed a 90 percent blockage in his right coronary artery, with acute pneumonia and a previous heart attack cited as contributing factors.
Health Struggles
Brendon had been diagnosed with a congenital heart defect following a heart attack in 2023. He also suffered from cauda equina syndrome, a condition causing severe back pain, for which he underwent surgery. A friend who lived with him in his final days reported that Brendon experienced chest pains but was reluctant to seek hospital treatment, describing him as "apprehensive" about doing so. CCTV footage from his home showed he had a persistent cough and a "raspy" voice in the lead-up to his death.
Family Statement
Brendon's family initially announced his passing on social media, stating he died of natural causes. In a heartfelt statement, they said: "We are heartbroken to share the passing of our brother and son, Nicholas Brendon. He passed in his sleep of natural causes. Most people know Nicky for his work as an actor... In recent years Nicky has found his passion in painting and art." They added that he was on medication and optimistic about the future at the time of his death.
Career and Personal Life
Brendon portrayed Xander Harris, Buffy's closest friend, on Buffy the Vampire Slayer from 1997 to 2003. He was married twice: first to Tressa DiFiglia from 2001 to 2007, and then to Moonda Tee from 2014 to 2015, with the second marriage lasting only five months. He had proposed just a week before their Las Vegas wedding in October 2014.
