Hospital Charity Launches Major Fundraising Drive for New Children's Unit
The East and North Hertfordshire Hospitals' Charity has officially launched a significant appeal, named the Children's Big Build, with the ambitious goal of raising £2 million. This funding is intended to transform a newly constructed, purpose-built facility at Lister Hospital into a magical and state-of-the-art centre of excellence for poorly children.
Substantial Investment and Enhanced Facilities
The East and North Hertfordshire Teaching NHS Trust has already secured £11 million to build the two-storey structure, which will feature 20 inpatient beds, 14 consulting rooms, and dedicated clinical assessment and care units. The charity's appeal seeks to provide additional funds to enhance this facility, creating beautiful and welcoming spaces tailored for children of all ages.
Younger patients will benefit from a dedicated play area, while older children can enjoy a recreation room designed to encourage social interaction and foster a sense of normality during their hospital stay. Families will have access to homely lounge areas and overnight accommodation, allowing them to remain close to their children during what can be a worrying time.
Specialised and Future-Ready Design
The unit will include protected play spaces specifically designed for children and young people undergoing cancer treatment or living with immunosuppression, ensuring their safety and comfort. Outdoor play areas will enable children to enjoy fresh air and the benefits of movement wherever possible.
Moreover, the facility will incorporate the latest digital and interactive technologies, making it adaptable and future-ready to meet evolving healthcare needs. This forward-thinking approach aims to set a new standard in paediatric care.
Community Support and Involvement
Eloise Huddleston, director of the charity, which also supports New QEII Hospital, Hertford County Hospital, and Mount Vernon Cancer Centre, expressed excitement about the project. "This is a very exciting time for the trust and the charity. With the core funding secured, we have this great opportunity to make this something truly exceptional—a unit built for the future of children's healthcare," she said.
Huddleston highlighted the supportive local community, encouraging donations through the charity's website, participation in fundraising events, or organising independent initiatives. She also called on local companies to get involved, offering contact details for further collaboration.
