Two teenagers attempted to kill a nurse in a drive-by shooting but did not even know who she was, a court heard. Nazmeen Begum's Audi was fired at from a BMW in Stechford Lane, Hodge Hill, on March 20 last year, a jury was told. The shot missed her but blew out the back windows of her car.
Court Details
It is alleged Isa Mohammed drove the BMW into position and passenger Idrees Ahmed fired the shotgun. Ms Begum, a mental health nurse who had just left a PureGym branch, did not know them, said the prosecution opening the case yesterday, Tuesday, June 2. Mohammed and Ahmed, both aged 19 and from Sparkbrook, stand trial at Birmingham Crown Court where they deny attempted murder and possessing a firearm with intent to endanger life.
Prosecution's Argument
"The prosecution case is she was the mistaken target of their attempt to kill," said prosecutor Earl Pinnock. He told the court: "On the night of March 20, 2025 a BMW pulled up alongside a grey Audi. A shotgun was pointed at the Audi from the BMW. Fortunately the shot missed the driver. It went into the rear right side window of that Audi, behind that Audi driver and it went through the rear hitting the opposite rear window, shattering it."
Mr Pinnock continued: "The people in the BMW acted together to kill the driver of the Audi. We the prosecution say they attempted to murder the Audi driver. If that discharged shot had hit its target no-one would be surprised if the Audi driver had died. To discharge a firearm - a lethal weapon - at a close target, a human target, indicates, we say, an intent to kill."
Victim's Routine
The court was told Ms Begum had gone to PureGym on Stechford Lane at 7.35pm and left at 9pm. She turned left out of the car park and then had to stop at a set of traffic lights. Mr Pinnock said: "At that moment the white BMW driven, we say, by Isa Mohammed, drove past her on her right side. Mr Ahmed, we say, was sat as a passenger in that vehicle. Likely he was a rear seat passenger and sat at or near the left side of the vehicle. He was readying himself to shoot. As a matter of common sense the window he was shooting out of must have been down and he shot at the driver of that grey Audi, Nazmeen Begum. By great fortune the shot missed her and it hit the two rear windows. Ms Begum had not been involved in any quarrel or feud with Isa Mohammed or Idrees Ahmed. She didn't even know them. She still doesn't know them. They don't know her."
The trial continues.
