Stockport NHS Foundation Trust’s urology and learning and education teams have provided training for medical colleagues from across the North West in an innovative surgical technique. The teams delivered a comprehensive training day focused on the prostate surgery technique known as HoLEP, which stands for Holmium Laser Enucleation Of The Prostate. This minimally invasive laser procedure is performed on men with very large prostates who suffer from urinary trouble or are in retention of urine.
Training Day Highlights
The training day included virtual reality simulations, allowing participants to practice the procedure in a realistic, risk-free environment. Additionally, attendees had the opportunity to observe live HoLEP cases performed by experienced surgeons. The course was designed to equip medical professionals with the skills needed to perform this advanced technique.
Advantages of HoLEP
The HoLEP technique offers several benefits over traditional surgery, including reduced bleeding, faster recovery times, and the ability to treat very large prostates regardless of size. This makes it a valuable option for patients who may not be suitable for other treatments.
Leading Centre for Training
The trust introduced the training programme in late 2023 and is currently one of only a handful of centres in the north of England providing this service. It is the first to offer a HoLEP course for trainees in the region. The success of this course confirms the trust as a leading centre for NHS training in the North West. Stepping Hill Hospital, where the training took place, is located in Stockport, Greater Manchester.
Future Impact
By training medical colleagues from across the North West, the trust is helping to expand access to this innovative procedure, potentially improving outcomes for patients with enlarged prostates. The use of VR simulations and live case observation ensures that trainees gain both theoretical knowledge and practical experience.
