A refuse collector known as The No1 Binman on TikTok has warned that food waste caddies will not be emptied if they contain garden waste. He expressed frustration that 'so many people' are confused about what belongs in their food waste bin.
Garden Waste a Common Issue
The binman said he frequently encounters grass cuttings, flowers, and even branches in food waste caddies during his rounds. 'Garden waste is not food waste,' he stressed. 'Garden trimmings, grass trimmings – they go in your compost bin, not your food waste bin.'
He added that if residents mix garden waste with food waste, the bin will likely be left unemptied. 'Otherwise, it'll get left, especially if it's mixed with your food. You're going to then have to sort it.'
Why Contamination Matters
The binman explained that putting non-food items in the caddy risks the entire load being rejected. 'So many people are getting confused. They put branches and stuff in it, and then they go 'why didn't it get emptied?' Because it's not food waste.'
He advised those without a garden waste bin to take trimmings to the tip or compost them at home.
Other Reasons for Refusal
According to reports, waste collectors can also refuse to empty bins for other reasons, including an open lid, excessive weight, contaminated recycling, or putting the bin out too late.
Birmingham City Council Guidance
Birmingham City Council advises residents to avoid putting any item that is not food waste in their caddy. This includes:
- Packaging of any kind, such as food wrappers
- Paper plates
- Black bags
- Liquids, such as milk
- Oil or fat
- Flowers or garden waste
The council website states: 'By keeping non-food items out of your caddy, you are making sure the food waste we collect can be recycled properly.'
