EV Take-Up Stalls as Drivers Fear Charging and Battery Issues
EV Adoption Stalls Over Charging and Battery Fears

Electric vehicle adoption in the UK appears to have stalled as drivers face mounting barriers, particularly fears around charging and battery life. According to recent reports, a growing 'confidence gap' is evident, especially among those considering second-hand EVs.

Charging remains the biggest sticking point

More than half of potential buyers (54 per cent) express anxiety about how they will keep their vehicle powered. Battery life is another major concern, with 42 per cent of drivers unsure how long an EV battery will last or whether it will hold its value over time.

Currently, there are over 24,000 charging connectors across nearly 9,000 locations in the UK. However, a previous Venson poll highlighted additional concerns: 41 per cent worry about the ease of home charging, and 30 per cent have reservations about servicing, maintenance, and repair costs.

Positive signs for company cars

The research also found that the majority (86 per cent) of drivers are no longer confused about the ownership implications of driving a company car. More than two-thirds believe they are now aware of the benefits in terms of convenience and costs.

Only 13 per cent cited not being able to test drive a vehicle as a barrier to purchase, and just 5 per cent expressed concerns over high manufacturing lead times.

Alison Bell, marketing director at Venson Automotive Solutions, commented: 'With charging and battery range concerns abated, EV fleets should now be far more appealing to businesses. The revised BiK charges, which see zero-emission electric vehicle tax liability for company car drivers fall from 2 per cent to 0 per cent for the tax year 2020-21, will also appeal to company car drivers, which should boost demand for EVs in the next 12 months.'
