HMRC to Pay £179 Child Benefit Early in May Due to Bank Holiday
HMRC to Pay £179 Child Benefit Early in May

HMRC has announced that Child Benefit payments will be made early in May due to the upcoming bank holiday. The late May bank holiday falls on Monday, May 25, prompting the tax authority to bring forward payments for those due to receive them on that date.

Early Payment Details

Households expecting a Child Benefit payment on Monday, May 25, will instead receive it three days earlier on Friday, May 22. This adjustment ensures that families are not delayed due to the bank holiday closure.

Child Benefit is typically paid every four weeks on a Monday or Tuesday. However, when a bank holiday occurs, payment dates are altered. HMRC advises claimants to check with their bank for the exact date of receipt.

Child Benefit Amounts

Child Benefit provides financial support to families. The weekly rates are £27.05 for the eldest or only child, equating to £1,406.60 annually, and £17.90 for each additional child. This means a household with one child receives £108 per month, while those with two children receive £179 per month.

How to Extend Claims

HMRC's Chief Customer Officer, Myrtle Lloyd, encouraged families to extend their Child Benefit claims promptly if their teenager plans to stay in education or training after GCSEs or National 5s. She stated, "You can extend your Child Benefit claim today in minutes via the HMRC app or online at GOV.UK."

Child Benefit can continue for teenagers studying full-time in non-advanced education or on unpaid approved training courses. A full list of eligible courses is available on GOV.UK.
