Martin Lewis MSE: Six Tips to Cut Council Tax, Including £1,500 Support
Martin Lewis' MSE: Six Ways to Cut Council Tax

Martin Lewis has shared six effective ways to reduce your Council Tax, offering potential savings of up to £1,500. With the cost of living crisis ongoing, these tips can significantly ease financial pressures, especially after many households saw a 5% increase last month, including in Birmingham.

Check Your Council Tax Band

Many Brits may be in the wrong Council Tax band without knowing. The bands were assessed in 1991 using a stop-gap system with drive-by valuations. Since then, no reassessment has been done, leaving around 400,000 homes potentially in the wrong band. You can check your neighbours' bands online to compare.

Challenge Your Council Tax Band

If you find you are in the wrong band, you can submit a formal or informal challenge. A formal challenge is preferable as it follows a set process, but it is only available to those who have lived in the property for six months or less. The MoneySavingExpert website provides a detailed guide on how to challenge your band.

Council Tax Discounts

Several discounts may apply:

  • If you are the only adult in your household, you could get a 25% discount.
  • If all residents are full-time students, no Council Tax is payable.
  • If you have a live-in carer, you might reduce your bill by 50%.
  • If your home has been adapted for a disabled person, you could drop a Council Tax band, though this must be reconfirmed annually.

Council Tax Support for Lower Incomes

Up to 2.25 million people on lower incomes are missing out on Council Tax Support worth up to £1,500. Each council runs its own reduction scheme. If you already receive means-tested benefits like Universal Credit or Pension Credit, you may be eligible. This support can cut your bill by up to 100%.

Overpaid Council Tax

An investigation found that 800,000 homes are sitting on £140 million in overpaid Council Tax. MSE provides a guide to help you claim back any overpayments.

Upcoming Changes to English Council Tax

Martin Lewis revealed that after meetings with government officials, changes to Council Tax administration will begin in April 2027. These reforms address many issues highlighted by his campaigns.
