A Solihull man shared an unexpected 'nightmare' after smashing a world record at the London Marathon. On Sunday, April 26, Dan Hudson broke the Guinness World Record for the fastest marathon time dressed as a microphone. His time of 3 hours, 35 minutes and 51 seconds was 39 minutes faster than the previous record.
Costume Choice and Challenges
With his podcast background, the decision to dress as a microphone seemed fitting for Hudson. Although the marathon went 'easier than expected', the eye-catching costume caused visibility issues towards the end. Speaking about the experience, Dan said: "It was actually easier than expected. I knew when I got the first couple of miles out the way in about seven minutes, I'd have to really mess up to not get the record."
"About 23 miles in, I looked to my left, and there was a woman running next to me with a BBC Sport microphone asking to do a TV interview. That was a really fun thing to do, even just to take my mind off the miles for two minutes or so."
Support from Crowds
"Then, just the whole way round, people are shouting 'microphone!' at me. I had to have my music on for a lot of it because I just can't run very long without it, but every time I took my headphones out, people were encouraging me."
"It was amazing, but towards the end it did become a bit of a nightmare. Visibility is bad, so I couldn't properly experience the amazing bits at the end, including Parliament and Buckingham Palace. I was mainly focused on pushing on but none of that really mattered."
Fundraising for a Good Cause
The record attempt was for a good cause as Dan raised over £1,300 for Marie Curie, who provided end-of-life care for his mother.
