Birmingham Airport has increased its drop-off fees, with drivers now paying £6 for a 10-minute stay, up from the previous £5. The new charge, which took effect on March 1st, is part of a broader trend of rising costs at airports across the United Kingdom.
Fee Hike Details
The airport's drop-off zone, located directly outside the terminal, now costs £6 for up to 10 minutes. For stays between 10 and 15 minutes, the fee rises to £8, and for 15 to 20 minutes, it is £10. The maximum stay in the drop-off area is 20 minutes, after which drivers must move to the long-stay car park.
Birmingham Airport said the increase was necessary to manage demand and encourage the use of public transport. A spokesperson stated: "We regularly review our parking charges to ensure they remain competitive while managing the high demand for our drop-off facilities. The new prices reflect the cost of providing a convenient service and encourage passengers to consider alternative travel options such as the train or bus."
Comparison with Other Airports
The hike brings Birmingham in line with other major UK airports. London Heathrow charges £5 for a 5-minute drop-off, while Gatwick costs £5 for 10 minutes. Manchester Airport charges £5 for 5 minutes, and Stansted charges £7 for 15 minutes. However, some airports like Luton and Edinburgh have recently increased their fees to £5 and £4 respectively.
Impact on Passengers
The rise is likely to affect the thousands of passengers who use the drop-off facility daily. Birmingham Airport served over 12 million passengers in 2023, and a significant proportion are dropped off by friends or family. The increase adds to the overall cost of air travel, which has already seen rising ticket prices and baggage fees.
Consumer groups have criticized the increases. Rory Boland, editor of Which? Travel, said: "Airports are taking advantage of captive customers by hiking drop-off fees. These charges are often a significant and unexpected cost for passengers, especially those with large families or who need assistance."
Alternatives to Driving
Birmingham Airport is well-connected by public transport. The airport has its own railway station with direct services to Birmingham New Street, Coventry, and London. The Air-Rail Link connects the station to the terminal. Buses also serve the airport from various locations. Passengers are encouraged to use these options to avoid the drop-off charges.
For those who must drive, the airport offers a free drop-off zone in the long-stay car park, but this requires a shuttle bus to the terminal. The airport also has a meet-and-greet service starting at £35 for a day.
Future Trends
Industry experts predict that drop-off fees will continue to rise as airports seek to maximize revenue and reduce congestion. Some airports are also introducing emission-based charges to encourage the use of electric vehicles. Birmingham Airport has not announced any such plans but said it will continue to review its pricing structure.
