Birmingham Airport Issues Urgent Update Following North Terminal Evacuation
Birmingham Airport has released an urgent statement after evacuating passengers from its North Terminal earlier today. The incident, which involved smoke detected in the baggage reclaim and immigration areas, prompted immediate action from airport authorities and emergency services.
Evacuation and Emergency Response
Photographs from the scene depict travellers gathered outside the terminal buildings, while social media reports indicate that fire crews from the West Midlands Fire Service were swiftly deployed to the airport. One user on X, formerly known as Twitter, described the situation, stating, "There was smoke in the baggage area and we were evacuated. Fire services are looking for the source, that's all we know."
A spokesperson for Birmingham Airport confirmed that the evacuation was a precautionary measure due to "an incident affecting baggage reclaim and immigration." The airport emphasized that the area has been contained and that operations continue elsewhere, with safety as the top priority.
Passenger Experiences and Disruptions
Passengers on the ground reported seeing multiple fire engines, including airport and West Midlands Fire Service vehicles, stationed near the immigration and baggage halls. Additionally, travellers on planes were affected, with some held onboard for over an hour. Jonathan Debono from Solihull, who was on an easyJet flight from Malta that landed at 1:25 PM, commented, "I can see an airport fire engine and a West Midlands fire engine parked outside. The pilot said the fire has been contained, but there's no update on when we can disembark. It's very warm on the plane."
Similar accounts emerged on Facebook, with users noting they were stuck on the runway, unable to leave their aircraft as fire engines rushed by. The airport has assured that further updates will be provided as the situation develops, maintaining that the site remains operational despite the localized disruption.
