Fire Incident at Birmingham Airport Leaves Passengers Stranded on Planes
Passengers are currently stuck on planes at Birmingham Airport following a fire incident at the North Terminal, causing significant disruptions and emergency responses.
Jonathan Debono, a resident from Solihull, reported to the Express & Star that he is trapped on an easyJet plane after landing from Malta at 1:25 PM. He has been held for over an hour, with no clear timeline for disembarkation.
Mr Debono stated: “I can see an airport fire engine and a West Midlands fire engine parked outside immigration and baggage hall. The pilot has said the fire has been contained but no update to when we can get off. It’s very warm on the plane.”
Social Media Reports Confirm Widespread Issues
Users on Facebook and X have also shared their experiences, highlighting the severity of the situation. One user mentioned being stuck on the runway, with fire engines rushing by, while another noted that transport buses cannot access the area due to the incident.
A third user posted: “Also stuck on an incoming plane. They can’t get the transport buses over.”
Evacuation and Emergency Response
The North Terminal has been fully evacuated as a precautionary measure, with travellers seen gathered outside in photographs from the scene. A spokesperson for Birmingham Airport confirmed the evacuation, citing an incident affecting baggage reclaim and immigration areas.
One X user at the airport reported: “There was smoke in the baggage area and we were evacuated. Fire services are looking for the source, that's all we know.”
A Birmingham Airport spokesperson said: “We are aware of an incident affecting baggage reclaim and immigration in the North Terminal. We are working with West Midlands Fire Service and as a precaution, passengers have been evacuated from this area only. The safety of our people and passengers is our number one priority and further updates will be provided.”
The incident has led to ongoing delays and uncertainty for many travellers, with emergency services actively managing the situation to ensure safety.
