Millions of electric vehicle (EV) drivers across the UK are now eligible for a significant price cut, following a major expansion of a key government grant scheme.
Budget Boost for Electric Cars
Chancellor Rachel Reeves used her Autumn Budget to inject a substantial extra £1.3 billion into the Electric Car Grant. This financial backing from the Labour government directly aims to put more zero-emission vehicles on British roads by making them more affordable for a wider range of motorists.
The core benefit for consumers remains a discount of £3,750 applied at the point of purchase. The key change is that the list of vehicles qualifying for this maximum discount has been broadened, opening up the saving to buyers considering newer models.
New Models Added to the Scheme
As a central part of the expansion, four new electric models have been added to the grant scheme. Drivers can now get the £3,750 discount on the following vehicles:
- Mini Countryman
- Renault 4
- Renault 5
- Renault Alpine A290

With these new additions, a total of eight models currently qualify for the maximum £3,750 grant. The existing models that remain eligible are:
- Citroen e-C5 Aircross Long Range
- Ford E-Tourneo Courier
- Ford Puma Gen-E
- Nissan Leaf
This move significantly increases choice for potential EV buyers, covering a range from compact city cars and popular crossovers to practical family vehicles. The announcement, made on 3 December 2025, is expected to accelerate the uptake of electric vehicles as the UK progresses towards its net-zero targets.
The expansion of the grant scheme represents a clear commitment from the government to sustain momentum in the electric vehicle market, ensuring financial incentives keep pace with the rapidly evolving model lineup offered by manufacturers.
