Kent Announces Major Expansion of Electric Vehicle Charging Network
In a significant development for sustainable transport, Kent County Council (KCC) has unveiled plans to install 10,000 new electric vehicle (EV) charging points across the county. This initiative, funded by a £12 million investment from the Labour Party government, marks a substantial step forward in supporting the transition to electric mobility.
Contract Awarded to Urban Fox for 20-Year Project
KCC has awarded a 20-year contract to charge point operator Urban Fox to deliver the project, which aims to provide reliable and affordable charging within walking distance of residents' homes. The first phase of the rollout is scheduled to begin in summer 2026, with a focus on areas that have limited off-street parking options.
Peter Osborne, cabinet member for highways and transport at KCC, emphasized the practical benefits of the programme. "We're pleased to support this initiative because it offers tangible assistance for residents and prepares Kent for the future," he stated. "It will deliver accessible charging solutions, particularly crucial for individuals without off-road parking, and it's being implemented at no additional cost to council tax payers."
Strategic Integration into Wider Transport Modernisation
This programme is part of KCC's broader strategy to modernise transport infrastructure and foster innovation throughout Kent. It builds upon recent efforts, including the installation of 200 public charge points primarily in car parks across the county. Urban Fox will collaborate closely with KCC and local communities to ensure that the charge points are strategically placed, using on-street solutions designed to integrate sensitively into residential environments while minimising disruption.
The South East of England currently boasts the second-highest number of public EV chargers in the country, trailing only behind London. With this new initiative, Kent's existing network of over 9,000 public chargers will be significantly enhanced, potentially providing comprehensive coverage that could reduce the need for EVs to have extensive range capabilities in the county.
This rollout represents a critical investment in green infrastructure, aligning with national goals to reduce carbon emissions and promote electric vehicle adoption. By addressing the charging needs of residents, especially those in urban areas with parking constraints, Kent is positioning itself as a leader in sustainable transport solutions.
