Major Escalator Replacement Project Begins at Birmingham New Street Station
Network Rail has initiated a comprehensive £17 million overhaul of the escalators at Birmingham New Street station, a move set to significantly enhance the travel experience for passengers. The project involves removing and replacing all 24 escalators that connect the platforms to the main concourse, with completion expected within two years.
Addressing Longstanding Passenger Frustrations
For years, the escalators at New Street have been a frequent source of annoyance for Brummies, often being out of service despite repairs in 2015. The current escalators, installed nearly a decade ago, have reached the end of their operational lifespan, leading to ongoing maintenance issues. Network Rail aims to replace them with heavy-duty versions to ensure safer and more reliable step-free access.
A spokesperson for Network Rail stated: "We are replacing all escalators between the concourse and platforms to provide a safer, more pleasant experience for passengers. This will help deliver reliable step-free access to and from trains over the next two years."
Project Details and Timeline
The work officially commenced at the end of March, with contractor KONE leading the escalator installations. While there will be no reduction in train services, certain trains may be reassigned to different platforms temporarily. Network Rail has assured passengers that regular announcements and on-site staff will be available to assist throughout the process.
In addition to the escalator upgrades, other developments are underway at the station. These include the construction of two new eateries: an expanded Greggs branch replacing the former Boots location and a Taco Bell outlet near the Bullring exit, adding to the station's dining options.
Broader Station Improvements
Beyond the escalators, hoarding has been erected beneath the old John Lewis building as construction progresses. Although Grand Central owner Hammerson has not provided updates on the former department store, the overall station enhancements reflect a commitment to modernizing Birmingham's key transport hub.
Network Rail expressed gratitude for passengers' patience during the upgrades, emphasizing that the improvements will make a substantial difference to the overall experience at Birmingham New Street station.
