Railway Veteran Returns to Flying Scotsman Footplate at Birmingham Moor Street

Alan Newman, a seasoned railway expert with decades of experience, has made a nostalgic return to the footplate of the historic Flying Scotsman locomotive at Birmingham Moor Street station. This special visit marks exactly 40 years since he last drove the renowned steam train, creating a poignant moment for both the veteran and the many families who gathered to see the iconic engine.

A Career Spanning Over Six Decades

Now 79 years old and turning 80 in November, Alan Newman has been immersed in the rail industry since he was just 15 years old, starting his journey back in 1962. Over the years, he has held a variety of roles that showcase his deep expertise and passion for railways. These positions include working as a railroad fireman, train driver, driver instructor, train traction inspector, and manager at London Victoria Station. He has also taken on operational roles both nationally and at Chiltern Railways, where he currently serves as a Duty Control Manager.

Supporting the Public During the Exhibition

On Friday, February 20, Alan Newman supported customers at Birmingham Moor Street as the station exhibited the Flying Scotsman to the public. Crowds flocked to Platform 4 in large numbers to visit and board the train. Alan was given the unique opportunity to ride the locomotive to Birmingham Moor Street before spending the afternoon assisting families on the platforms. Reflections on a Proud Moment

Alan Newman, hailing from King's Sutton in Northamptonshire, shared his thoughts on the experience. “I was proud to return to Flying Scotsman 40 years after driving it in the eighties,” he said. “Seeing so many families excited to see the train brought it all back and really shines the railway in a positive light. The enthusiasm from the general public to see historic locomotives such as Flying Scotsman makes me proud to have worked in this industry since 1962.”

Driving the Flying Scotsman in the Past

In addition to his recent visit, Alan Newman has a direct history with the Flying Scotsman. He drove the locomotive on the Sunday Luncheon specials from London Marylebone to Stratford-upon-Avon between 1986 and 1987. This period of his career highlights his hands-on experience with one of the most famous steam trains in history, adding to the significance of his return to the footplate.

Recognition from Chiltern Railways

Tony Baxter, Operations Director at Chiltern Railways, praised Alan Newman for his contributions. “Alan has had a long and distinguished career in rail and he is a credit to Chiltern Railways,” Baxter stated. “It was wonderful to see Alan supporting the public visiting Flying Scotsman at nearly 80 years of age. The popularity of Flying Scotsman was evident last week as so many families were out to visit the locomotive at Birmingham Moor Street.”
