Six New Train Stations in South Wales Advance as Infrastructure Plans Submitted

Plans for six brand new train stations in South Wales have taken a significant step forward after infrastructure work proposals were submitted for approval. The railway upgrades between Cardiff Central and Severn Tunnel Junction are set to make the development of these stations a reality, enhancing regional connectivity and rail access.

Infrastructure Improvements and Business Case Submission

Network Rail Wales and Borders has submitted the full business case for the South Wales Relief Line Upgrade to the UK Government Department for Transport. This project includes increasing train speeds up to 100mph, improving track infrastructure, and boosting rail access. Currently, the relief lines are primarily used by freight services, but the upgrades will allow passenger services to operate without additional time, while also enabling freight trains to travel at higher speeds.

Proposed New Stations and Community Impact

The infrastructure work is essential for the proposed development of up to six new stations: Cardiff East, Newport West, Somerton, Llanwern, Magor and Undy, and Cardiff Parkway. These stations aim to improve local connectivity and provide more communities with access to rail travel, addressing long-standing transportation needs in the region.

Statements from Key Officials

Nick Millington, route director for Network Rail Wales and Borders, stated, "By increasing the speed and capability of the relief lines between Cardiff and Severn Tunnel Junction, we can create the capacity needed to support new passenger services and unlock the proposed new stations along this route." Vernon Everitt, Chair of Transport for Wales, called this a "major step" in their ambition to bring new stations to southeast Wales, noting that the improvements will make the proposed stations a reality by increasing capacity through higher line speeds.

Broader Investment and Government Support

This scheme is part of a wider programme of investment in Welsh railways, building on the UK Government's recent commitment to progress rail improvements across the region. In February, Prime Minister Keir Starmer endorsed a wish list of projects from Transport for Wales, which includes funding for the six new stations between Cardiff and the Severn Tunnel, as well as a new station at Deeside to enhance services between north Wales and Merseyside.

The submission of these plans marks a pivotal moment in transforming South Wales's rail infrastructure, promising improved travel options and economic benefits for local communities.
