Millions of Vehicles with Overdue MOTs
Figures obtained from the DVLA by motoring experts at Confused.com paint a concerning picture. The data indicates that in 2024 alone, a staggering 791,000 vehicles were being used on public roads without a valid MOT certificate.
Looking at a broader three-year period, the scale of the issue is even more alarming. Between 2022 and 2024, an estimated 2.9 million vehicles were driven with an MOT that was overdue. Regional breakdowns show the problem is nationwide, with one notable hotspot being the West Midlands, where 326,000 vehicles were non-compliant over that three-year span.
The Serious Risks of an Expired MOT
Rhydian Jones, a motoring expert at Confused.com, stressed that an MOT is far more than a bureaucratic formality. "It’s one of the most important ways to make sure your car is reliable and safe to drive," he said.
Driving without a valid MOT carries significant consequences:
- A potential fine of up to £1,000.
- The risk that your car insurance could be invalidated, leaving you personally liable for any accident costs.
- Driving a potentially dangerous vehicle, as common MOT failures involve critical safety components like brakes, tyres, and suspension.
"An expired MOT doesn’t just mean a fine," Jones added. "It means your car might not be roadworthy, which puts you and others at risk."

Experts suggest that while cost-of-living pressures may be a factor, simple forgetfulness is a major cause for the high numbers. To help drivers stay on top of their annual test, many garages now offer solutions.
"Many of the faults that cause MOT failures can often be avoided with simple and regular checks," advised Jones. "Taking the time to spot problems early can save you money on repairs and help prevent accidents."
Payment schemes that spread the cost of an MOT and service across the year, often coupled with reminder services, are becoming more common. These plans are designed to make essential vehicle maintenance more manageable and affordable, ensuring cars remain safe and legal for everyone on the road.
