Isle of Man Implements Diesel Rationing with £20 Limit Amid Fuel Shortages
Diesel Rationing Hits Isle of Man with £20 Limit

Diesel Rationing Introduced on Isle of Man with Strict £20 Limit

The first diesel rationing measures have been implemented on the Isle of Man, with multiple fuel stations across the island imposing a £20 spending limit per customer. This development comes amid ongoing fuel shortages linked to the escalating crisis in the Middle East, which has disrupted supply chains and led to significant stock depletion at local forecourts.

Widespread Fuel Shortages Reported

According to recent reports, several key fuel stations have completely run out of diesel. SPAR Isle of Man confirmed that its Airport Garage and Ramsey locations are now empty of diesel, while Corkills Garage in Onchan and EVF in Laxey have also reported similar shortages. In response, SPAR has enforced a £20 cap on diesel purchases at its remaining forecourts, although unleaded petrol remains readily available in stock.

Paul Cassidy of Island Fuels has been providing crucial assistance by operating a mobile fuel station, delivering diesel to residents across the island and helping to mitigate the impact of the shortages. Deliveries of diesel are scheduled to arrive on the Isle of Man tomorrow, with SPAR announcing via Facebook that its five filling stations will receive fuel supplies on Tuesday.

Easter Travel Concerns Amid Rising Fuel Prices

The timing of these shortages coincides with the Easter bank holiday getaway, traditionally one of the busiest periods for road travel. Sean Kimberlin, team leader of the RAC mobile servicing and repairs unit, highlighted that 2026 is expected to see the busiest Easter on the roads since 2022, following the post-Covid lockdown reopening.

Kimberlin noted, "Despite fuel prices rising dramatically due to the conflict in the Middle East, our research suggests Easter remains incredibly important to people as it’s often the first chance to get away since Christmas or to meet up with friends and family." He added that while many drivers are concerned about the increased costs, only a small number have altered their travel plans as a result.

Fuel prices have surged significantly, with the cost of filling a family diesel car now approximately £19 higher than this time last year, and petrol tanks costing around £8 more. In light of these challenges, the RAC is encouraging motorists to use the myRAC app to locate the most affordable forecourts in their vicinity.

Community Response and Future Outlook

SPAR's social media update reassured customers, stating, "Update! Our five forecourts will receive fuel deliveries on Tuesday. No need to stock up with delivery on the way! All forecourts have good supplies of unleaded petrol." This message aims to prevent panic buying and ensure a more orderly distribution of available resources.

The introduction of diesel rationing underscores the broader economic and logistical impacts of global conflicts on local communities. As the situation evolves, residents and authorities alike are closely monitoring fuel supplies and adjusting strategies to maintain essential services and support daily commutes during this critical period.
