Nationwide Introduces 72-Hour Gambling Block for Enhanced Account Security
Nationwide Building Society has announced a new gambling block feature for its accounts, which includes a mandatory 72-hour waiting period for deactivation. This initiative is specifically designed to assist customers who are concerned about their gambling expenditures. With branches located in Birmingham, Nationwide is rolling out this measure to provide an additional layer of financial protection.
How the Gambling Block Works
The gambling block can be activated through multiple channels. Customers can enable it by calling Nationwide, visiting a branch in person, or using the banking app or internet bank. Once activated, the block prevents most gambling payments from being processed through the debit card.
To turn on the block via the app, users must log in, select their account, choose Manage cards, then Gambling, and finally toggle the block on. In the internet bank, the process involves logging in, selecting the account, navigating to Other account services from the left-hand menu, choosing Gambling controls, turning the block on, and confirming the action.
Key Limitations and Exceptions
Nationwide has clarified that deactivating the block requires a 72-hour waiting period, which cannot be expedited even through phone or branch assistance. The block primarily targets transactions identified via merchant category codes (MCCs) assigned by gambling companies. However, it may not cover all scenarios.
- Scratch cards and lottery tickets in some shops may not be blocked, depending on the shop's till setup.
- Bank transfers, payments through the internet bank, app, or open banking are not affected.
- In-game purchases in video games remain unblocked.
- Transactions through PayPal or international payments marked as gambling might occasionally bypass the block if not properly identified.
This measure is part of Nationwide's broader effort to support responsible spending and account security for its members in Birmingham and beyond.
