Nearly 130 products have been recalled in the UK so far this year due to cancer-causing asbestos, with the vast majority being children's toys sold at major retailers including Aldi, Tesco, Crayola, Smyths, Hunter Price, and Hobbycraft.
Extent of Recalls
The Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS) has recorded 127 product recalls over asbestos contamination. Items containing sand should be double-bagged and sealed to prevent further risk. Parents are urged to check if their children's toys match those on the OPSS recall list, which also includes products from Argos, Home Bargains, Morrisons, Poundland, and TK Maxx.
Consumer Concerns
Sue Davies, head of consumer protection policy at Which?, said: “Seemingly innocent children’s toys can have serious health consequences if there aren’t proper checks to ensure they comply with safety laws.” One internet user commented: “These are UK companies that don’t seem to have been doing the correct testing from suppliers, in this case for asbestos. If we know a suppliers country has lax regulation, then testing should be really important.” Another added: “It’s absolutely criminal that companies are left to their own devices regarding public health.”
Impact on Schools
The issue has even led to the closure of two schools in North Tyneside as a precautionary measure. One school has since reopened after testing negative for asbestos.
Legal Context
Asbestos has been banned in the UK since 1999, making it illegal to import, sell, or use any asbestos-containing materials. The recalls highlight ongoing concerns about supply chain safety and regulatory compliance.
