Four police officers were injured and fourteen individuals arrested during a demonstration outside the Iranian embassy in London, Scotland Yard has confirmed.
Chaotic Scenes at Diplomatic Premises
The Metropolitan Police stated that the arrests on Friday, January 16, were made on suspicion of a range of offences. These included violent disorder, assaulting an emergency worker, criminal damage, and trespass on diplomatic premises.
All four officers hurt in the incident suffered minor injuries. Footage circulating on social media platforms appeared to show scuffles between police and protesters, with some individuals seen with injuries.
Flag Removal Triggers Confrontation
The situation escalated significantly when one protester allegedly gained unlawful access to the private embassy building in Kensington. The force reported that the individual climbed across several balconies to reach a terrace.
A key moment in the protest saw this person remove the Iranian flag from the embassy. When officers moved in to make a lawful arrest, a group of protesters attempted to intervene and prevent it.
"Dispersal tactics were used by officers to ensure the safety of those concerned and prevent further disorder," a Metropolitan Police spokesperson explained. The man was ultimately detained on suspicion of criminal damage, trespass on diplomatic property, and assaulting police. He remains in custody.
Police Response and Ongoing Investigation
In response to the unfolding disorder, the Met deployed additional officers to the scene. Authorities also implemented a Section 35 dispersal order, granting them extra powers to direct people to leave the area to help clear the crowds.
The total of 14 arrests underscores the seriousness with which police are treating the breach of security at a diplomatic mission. The investigation into the events of Friday is ongoing.
This incident highlights the challenges faced by police in maintaining public order and protecting diplomatic sites during politically charged protests in the UK capital.
