Birmingham Indian Takeaway Shut Down After Cockroach and Rat Infestation
Birmingham Takeaway Closed Over Severe Pest Infestation

Hajee Desi Khana, an Indian takeaway located on Coventry Road in Small Heath, Birmingham, has been forced to close after a severe pest infestation was discovered by Birmingham City Council environmental health officers.

Inspection Details

Following a public complaint on April 30, officers conducted an inspection and found evidence of rats, mice, and cockroaches throughout the premises. Rat droppings were discovered in the kitchen, underneath fridges, and in storage areas. Mouse droppings were found behind a drinks fridge, while cockroaches were seen crawling up walls and near flour containers.

Health Risks Identified

Environmental health officer Thomas Smith noted that cockroach egg shells were present, each capable of carrying 20 to 30 baby cockroaches. A leaking hot water pipe was also identified as creating an ideal breeding environment for cockroaches.

Court Order Issued

Birmingham Magistrates Court granted a hygiene emergency prohibition order on May 7, citing an imminent risk of injury to health due to pest activity, lack of effective cleaning, and food exposed to contamination. The order will remain in place until all issues are rectified and the council confirms no further risk to public health.

Mr. Smith stated that the owner has been contacted and confirmed he has not yet reopened, as work is ongoing to address the problems.
