Birmingham Woman Jailed for Second Time Over Human Trafficking Order Breach
A Birmingham woman previously linked to a city brothel has been imprisoned again after breaching a human trafficking prevention order for the second time in just four months. Lanlan Guo, aged 35, was sentenced at Birmingham Magistrates' Court on Thursday to nine months behind bars.
Background of the Case
Guo was originally placed under a strict Slavery Trafficking Risk Order following an earlier police investigation into modern slavery in the Southside area of Birmingham. This order was designed to prevent her involvement in human trafficking activities.
In December of last year, Guo was jailed for 20 weeks after she was found driving with individuals who were not family members during a police patrol in October, which constituted a breach of the order. During that investigation, a significant amount of cash was discovered at her home address, and evidence of a brothel was found at another property in Cheapside.
Recent Breach and Arrest
On Monday, March 26, after serving her initial prison sentence, Guo was spotted by officers in the city and subsequently searched. During this search, police found a bank card in her possession that was registered under another person's name, leading to her arrest for breaching the order once more.
Guo later pleaded guilty to the breach, marking her second violation of the human trafficking prevention order within a short timeframe. The court's decision to impose a nine-month sentence underscores the seriousness of her actions.
Police Statements and Community Impact
PC Tobias Butterworth of West Midlands Police commented on the case, stating, "Along with our colleagues in the Birmingham Serious Organised Crime and Exploitation Team, we're working through a significant amount of intelligence around exploitation, modern slavery, and brothels. Risk orders are put in place for important reasons. Guo knew the conditions imposed on her - so she has rightly been sent to prison for breaking it."
Detective Inspector Tom Lyons added, "We know that organised criminality has been a concern in Southside and, since we expanded our operation to the area, we’ve been determined to crack down on it, securing some significant results including closing brothels and jailing those responsible for running them. At the heart of this is our commitment to protecting vulnerable people, and we will continue to work with our partners to do this."
Authorities are urging anyone with concerns or information about similar crimes to come forward, emphasizing their ongoing efforts to combat exploitation and protect vulnerable individuals in the community.
