Bus Driver Attacked and Bitten During Birmingham City Centre Altercation
A bus passenger was arrested in Birmingham following an alleged assault on a driver and a reported sexual attack on another passenger aboard a double-decker service. The incident occurred on the No.74 NX West Midlands bus at Priory Queensway, where driver Harvey Kalsey sustained injuries including bite marks and nail piercings to his arms.
Passengers Intervene to Restrain Suspect
Witnesses described how fellow travellers became involved in a scuffle to prevent the man from fleeing the scene. According to accounts, passengers blocked the emergency exit from outside the bus and pinned the individual down inside the vehicle until authorities arrived.
Harvey Kalsey recounted the ordeal to local media, stating, "I had to restrain a man as he tried to run from the scene. He grabbed my wrist various times, bit me on the hand and there were various nail marks, piercing my skin and drawing blood."
The driver added that passengers quickly became aware of the situation and took action to stop the suspect from leaving, leading to a confrontation before police reached the location.
Police Response and Arrest Details
West Midlands Police officers responded to reports of two assaults on a bus in Birmingham at approximately 7:30 pm on Easter Monday, April 6. Six police cars arrived at the scene following the disturbance.
A 45-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of sexual assault against a passenger and causing actual bodily harm to the bus driver. However, after further investigation and discussions with the passenger involved, no further action was taken regarding the sexual assault allegation.
The suspect remains on bail pending additional inquiries into the assault on the bus driver. A police spokesperson confirmed the arrest and subsequent release with no further action on the sexual assault charge, emphasizing the ongoing investigation into the physical attack.
This incident highlights concerns over safety on public transport in Birmingham, with community members stepping in to assist during a violent episode. The bus driver's injuries, though not life-threatening, required medical attention due to the nature of the bites and scratches inflicted.
