BirminghamLive Campaign: Lifetime Bans for Killer Drivers After Fatal Crashes

Every time we step onto a pavement or cross a road, we place an unspoken trust in the people behind the wheel. We trust that they will follow the rules, stay alert, and value human life above haste or convenience. But for some motorists, that trust is broken in the most catastrophic way possible.

At BirminghamLive, we have had enough of people breaking this trust, which is why we are campaigning to ban killer drivers and have their licences revoked permanently. We have already identified several drivers we believe should be banned for life, but the issue persists with more individuals demonstrating a profound disregard for the safety of others.

Recent Cases Highlighting the Need for Action

The tragedy is often compounded by cowardice, as drivers abandon victims rather than stopping to help, turning a terrible act into something even more unforgivable. Our editor-in-chief, Graeme Brown, posts about killer drivers on LinkedIn every week, and here are seven more drivers we think the roads would be better off without.

Saqlane Zafar: A 28-year-old from Saltley, Zafar was sentenced to 15 years in prison for death by dangerous driving and perverting the course of justice. He killed 21-year-old Ryan Sandhu in a crash on the A38 (M) Aston Expressway.

Justin Clarke-Samuel: Better known as grime artist Ghetts, he was over the drink-drive limit and driving up to 70mph when he killed 20-year-old Nepalese student Yubin Tamang in his BMW M5. He drove eight miles home without stopping and had 12 previous convictions for 27 crimes. He was jailed for 12 years and banned from driving for 17 years.

Ryan Scott: Scott was driving at 112mph when he killed mother-of-two Claire Laybourne, described as the "kindest person" by her best friend. He was sentenced to 10 years in prison and banned from driving for 13 years and eight months.

Mustafaa Hussain: Hussain made a "catastrophically bad" decision to overtake in a queue of traffic, killing 42-year-old Mark Coleman, a loved husband and father riding his scooter. Hussain was jailed for four years and 10 months and banned from driving for seven years and five months.

Trad Almaghrabi: Almaghrabi ran from the scene after crashing his car at speeds thought to be up to 146mph, killing 27-year-old Naweed Hussain. He had been seen buying alcohol before the crash, and police found a Nitrous Oxide canister and cannabis at the scene. He was jailed for ten years and disqualified from driving for 11 years and eight months.

Jamie Hawken: Hawken was three times over the alcohol limit and driving on the wrong side of the road when he killed 56-year-old motorcyclist Tracy Godfrey. He did not stop or call 999 after the impact. He was jailed for 10 years and eight months and banned from driving for 10 years.

Rory Nimmo and John Clark: These two men were racing at speeds of up to 111mph in the dark when they killed care worker Shona McKinlay, 46. Each was sentenced to eight years in jail and banned for 12 years.

Editor's Comment: A Call for Stricter Measures

Deadly drivers need to lose their licences permanently. Full stop. This campaign aims to push for legislative changes that ensure those who cause fatal accidents through reckless behavior are never allowed behind the wheel again, protecting our communities and upholding road safety standards.
