A murder investigation is underway after a devoted grandfather died following an alleged assault outside a village pub in Leicestershire.

David Darke, 62, passed away in hospital on Saturday, December 27, just days after the incident near The Crown Inn in Appleby Magna. His devastated family have released a photograph and a moving statement through the police, describing him as a "proud grandfather" and a "devoted family man."
In their statement, Mr Darke's family said: "Dave was a deeply loved father to three daughters and a proud grandfather to three boys. He was a much-loved brother and a dear friend. Dave will live on forever in our hearts, minds and souls."
They added: "He was a strong, active, intelligent and kind person who was a friend to all. He was a devoted family man with a deep passion for life, the outdoors, nature and walking. His life was tragically cut short and he's now reunited with his loving, caring parents. He will be sorely missed by all who knew and loved him."

Leicestershire Police were called to the pub at approximately 9.45pm on Saturday, December 21, following reports of an assault. Officers discovered the victim outside the premises with a serious head injury.
