Greggs, the popular bakery chain with branches in Birmingham, has become the latest retailer to take decisive action against the UK's shoplifting epidemic. The company is rolling back self-service display cabinets in stores that have been most severely affected by theft, replacing them with staff-operated counters.
In a trial that includes several Birmingham outlets, as well as branches in Croydon, Peckham, Whitechapel, Upton Park, and Wilford, Nottinghamshire, customers are now served directly by staff from behind theft-proof counters. This move comes as part of a broader effort to combat rising levels of antisocial behaviour and retail crime.
Political Response to Shoplifting Crisis
Labour Party leader Sir Keir Starmer is expected to address the issue on Monday, stating: "Working people – grafters – go to work, do the right thing, keep our high streets thriving and yet too often they are abused or assaulted by people who think they can get away with it and just cheat the system. It’s disgraceful." He will also announce the end of what he calls a "shoplifters' charter."
Greggs Statement on the Trial
A Greggs spokesperson confirmed: "This is one of a number of initiatives we are trialling across a very small number of shops which are exposed to higher levels of antisocial behaviour." The company has not yet indicated whether the trial will be extended to other locations.
Context of Retail Crime
The decision follows a high-profile incident involving Morrisons manager Sean Egan, who was sacked after tackling a repeated thief at his Aldridge store. His local MP, Wendy Morton, has written to the supermarket's chief executive, describing Egan as a "hero" to her constituents. The Conservative MP for Aldridge-Brownhills expressed astonishment at the community's outcry, noting that the store is "firmly rooted in our community." She added: "It feels like something isn't quite right here, it doesn't seem fair that somebody was getting on with their job."
As the trial progresses, Greggs aims to assess the effectiveness of the new layout in reducing theft and ensuring a safer environment for both staff and customers.
