Dean Lack, a 27-year-old inmate at HMP Featherstone near Wolverhampton, has been jailed for 36 months after a series of vile attacks on prison officers, including throwing his own urine at them. The assaults left staff feeling disgusted and violated, with some seeking medical advice over fears of contracting diseases.
Details of the Attacks
Stafford Crown Court heard how Lack first spat directly into prison officer Daniel Mason's face. He was then moved to a segregation unit. Two days later, he threw a cup of urine at three officers serving him food, hitting all of them in the face. In a third incident, Lack threw a bowl of urine at officers delivering his medication, striking prison officer Peter Smith-Round's head and body.
Mr Smith-Round said: "I do not understand why Lack did what he did as there had been no animosity or build up to this." The court heard Lack duped officers into thinking he was compliant before catching them off-guard with his repulsive assaults.
Mental Health Background
The court was told that Lack suffers from paranoid schizophrenia, borderline personality disorder, and psychosis, and was not taking his medication at the time of the attacks. His defence said he was "remorseful" and "wished he went about expressing his frustrations in an entirely different manner."
Sentencing and Charges
Sentencing, Recorder Joyce told Lack: "These offences are extremely unpleasant. The offences were clearly planned." Lack, of St Josephs Approved Premises, Eccles, Greater Manchester, admitted one count of assault on an emergency worker and six counts of administering a noxious substance with intent. He will now serve 36 months in prison for his actions at HMP Featherstone.
