Parents Weep in Court as Teenagers Face Murder Charges Over Schoolgirl's Death
In a deeply emotional scene at Leeds Magistrates' Court, the parents of three teenagers accused of murder broke down in tears as their children appeared before magistrates. The trio are jointly charged with the murder of 16-year-old Chloe Watson Dransfield, who was discovered with fatal stab wounds on the morning of Saturday, March 28.
Court Appearance and Charges
Kayla Smith, 18, Archie Rycroft, 19, and a 17-year-old boy, who cannot be named for legal reasons due to his age, appeared together in the dock on Tuesday, March 31. They wore grey prison-issued tracksuits, with dock officers seated between them. The public gallery was filled with sobbing family members as the accused were brought into court.
District Judge Mark Daley informed them, "You are all charged with murder. That can only be tried at the Crown Court, and only the Crown Court can decide whether to grant you bail or not. Therefore there has to be a hearing at the Crown Court very soon." The next hearing is scheduled for Thursday, April 2, at Leeds Crown Court.
Remand and Additional Charges
Smith and Rycroft were remanded into custody, while the 17-year-old was placed in secure accommodation until the upcoming hearing. None of the three indicated any pleas to the murder charge during this initial proceeding.
In separate matters, Rycroft pleaded not guilty to two charges of burglary and one of theft related to incidents in March. The 17-year-old boy also pleaded not guilty to a burglary charge from August.
Tributes to Chloe Watson Dransfield
Chloe, from Gomersal, died in hospital following an incident on Kennerleigh Avenue in the Austhorpe area of Leeds at approximately 6 a.m. on Saturday. Her family has paid heartfelt tributes, expressing their devastation and love for the vibrant teenager.
Chloe's dad and other relatives said, "We miss every single thing about her. She was beautiful, full of joy, and had a wonderfully cheeky personality. She embraced life with such happiness, and she had her whole future ahead of her. Chloe was loved by everyone who knew her, and the absence she leaves behind is immeasurable. We will miss her forever, she will never be forgotten."
In a separate tribute, Chloe's mother described her as her "beautiful princess," saying, "You are my life, my world, my best friend and I know that I am yours. I cannot live without you – I need you. You are stunning, confident, loyal, honest and my family-oriented princess. When you walk into any room it lights up with your bubbly personality. There is so much I could say. There's a big hole in my heart that can never be filled."
