Police in Worcestershire have launched an urgent search operation amid fears a man may have entered a river after his personal belongings were discovered covered in frost on the bank.
Frost-Covered Discovery Sparks Concern
West Mercia Police issued an initial appeal on Sunday, January 4, after a member of the public found a collection of items beside the River Avon in Pershore. The discovery was made near the Pershore Leisure Centre on King George's Way.
The items, which had clearly been exposed to the elements for some time, included a mobility trolley, a walking stick, and a Marks & Spencer puffer jacket. Also found were a pair of Hugo sunglasses and a distinctive pink Charles Tyrwhitt scarf.
Officers noted that the belongings were covered in frost, indicating they had likely been at the location for at least several hours in the cold January weather.
From Appeal to Active Search Operation
Following their public appeal to locate the owner, police conducted swift enquiries. By the afternoon of Monday, January 5, the force provided a significant update.
A spokesperson confirmed that the owner of the items had been identified. However, the development took a serious turn, with officers now expressing concern for the man's welfare.
"Searches are currently ongoing as it is believed that a man may have entered the river in Pershore," the police statement read. The spokesperson added that specialised search teams had joined local officers in the area as the operation continues.
Ongoing Search and Support Resources
The focus has now shifted from identifying the owner of the belongings to a coordinated search effort along the river. The police have not released further details about the man at the centre of the investigation.
