Police in Birmingham have made a significant number of arrests overnight, marking a robust start to the New Year as officers vowed to tackle crime across the region.
A Busy Night for West Midlands Police
The force described a "busy" shift in the early hours of Tuesday, 6 January 2026, with officers responding to several separate incidents across the city. The operations unit was actively patrolling the region's roads as part of their commitment to public safety.
Stolen Vehicle Stopped in Shard End
One of the key incidents occurred at around 4.30am in the Shard End area. Officers spotted a cloned car, which was believed to be stolen and linked to a recent vehicle theft. The car was successfully stopped on Chelmsley Road.
Following the stop, two men, both aged 23, were arrested on suspicion of theft of a motor vehicle. During the arrest, a balaclava was also recovered by the police.
Further Arrests for Drug Driving and Licence Offences
In a separate incident on Percy Road in Sparkhill, officers pulled over a vehicle suspected of carrying drugs. A 25-year-old man was arrested at the scene on suspicion of drug driving. He remains in police custody for questioning.
Meanwhile, in Birmingham city centre, police detained a driver on Digbeth High Street after checks revealed he did not possess a valid driving licence. The vehicle was seized, and the 18-year-old driver will be reported for driving offences.
Police Reiterate Public Safety Vow
In a statement, West Midlands Police emphasised their tireless work to make communities safer and reiterated their New Year commitment to tackling crime. However, they also stressed the vital role the public plays in this effort.
The force urged residents to report any suspicious activity. Information can be shared via Live Chat on their website, by calling 101, or in an emergency by dialling 999. For those wishing to remain anonymous, tips can be given to the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
